The Daily Scroll: A Mentorship Recap – July 6th, 2020 Show Notes

Kay:

Hey there, Questers! Welcome to Episode 131. We’ve got a great quote for you today. And, it’s also a little bit of a different quote, because instead of quoting somebody famous or super well known today, we actually took a lesson that came from somebody who left a comment on one of our posts on Facebook!

Shi:

So, we’ll read you the comment and the story, and it comes from Kirk Allaire, a long time a friend and fan of ours, who commented on one of our posts, “In my football coaching days years ago, I remember asking a mentor coach of mine what is the difference between a good coach and a great coach. Without hesitation he said a good coach will collect himself and his team after a loss and make the needed changes and come back the following week and dominate. A great coach will make the needed changes in the middle of the loss at halftime, rally his team and come back in the second half and dominate for the win.”

Kay:

What an awesome comment and take away from Kirk Allaire. Kirk, we’re so glad that you gave this to us! It’s such an incredible lesson. And, you might be wondering, why are we pulling this out right here on July 6th? And, maybe you’re questioning: Why didn’t this come toward the end of June, which is the real halftime of the year after all? Well, we all know that attempting to set halftime goals, when you are in holiday celebration mode, can be really difficult. So, we wanted to wait until after the 4th of July holiday to get you in on thinking about the second half of 2020!

Shi:

See – you’re welcome! We gave you a little week of a break. And, someone else you’ll hear from later this week is John Maxwell….You probably know of him…We certainly talk enough about him! But, he talks about this halftime concept quite a bit. And so, we’ve gotten into the rhythm of, towards the end of June, and the beginning of July, thinking about this halftime of our year, and what course corrections and adjustments can be made to better the second half. And, when this comment came through from Kirk, we were like, this is such a good example of how those shifts in the middle of the game can make ALL the difference!

Kay:

For us, we’re already talking about expanding our show offering on our Facebook page, in the second half of the year…We’ve been talking about how to better our to-go product in anticipation of potential shutdowns again in the Fall for our restaurants…We’ve been discussing how to get more comfortable masks for our associates, in anticipation of maybe the longterm mask wearing that will be happening in this second half…And, overall, we’ve been taking the lessons that we learned through those shutdowns to apply for this second half of the year – just in case it happens to us again! So, that way, we’re a little bit more prepared from a business person’s perspective. So, this isn’t just smoke gang! We literally had that conversation this morning, and asked ourselves: What does the second half of 2020 look like for Kay & Shi? Because, it really is that important to take a look at what you learned from the first six months, and then find out how you can apply it to the next six months!

Shi:

We’ve really tried to work on finding this sweet spot between being too flexible, and being too rigid. And, by being too rigid we mean – starting 2020 with a set of goals, and, right now – at halftime – saying, “Well, those are my goals for 2020, and I’m just going to keep on pushing that rock up the hill!” When, we have to face the reality that a LOT has changed! Surely you’re nodding along right now, and thinking, “Yeah, 2020 has been a year no one expected to unfold the way that it has.” And so, it’s necessary to make the adjustments based on what we’ve learned in the first six months of the year. Because, in January, we wouldn’t have known that in July we would need to be talking about masks, to-go procedures, testing, temperature taking, and all kinds of different things. But, we’re being able to be flexible with that because it’s time to assess at halftime. Now, there’s also the other side of that coin where you can be too flexible. And, we’ve been there before, too…where we chase every wild, new idea, and where every new thing that happens feels like it’s here to stay forever! And, that means we’re going to implement an entire new process change, and a policy, and all of those things. And really, what we want to do is be right in the middle of flexibility and rigidity, and ask ourselves: What has worked well in the first half of the year? And, where do we need to make adjustments?

Kay:

So, as you’re taking a look at your second six months of 2020, do your best not to fall into the trap of seeing all of the hard stuff that happened at the beginning of the year and throwing this entire year out the window! I’ve seen so many memes out there right now that are like, “Well, 2020 is gone”, or labeling it as the worst year ever, when there’s still SIX MONTHS to go! And, even though it’s been a rough first half, doesn’t mean that we can’t recover at halftime and make for a great win in the end! So, just a reminder for you, today’s quote was actually a comment on one of our Facebook posts from Kirk Allaire. And, he says, “In my football coaching days years ago, I remember asking a mentor coach of mine what is the difference between a good coach and a great coach. Without hesitation he said a good coach will collect himself and his team after a loss and make the needed changes and come back the following week and dominate. A great coach will make the needed changes in the middle of the loss at halftime, rally his team and come back in the second half and dominate for the win.”

Shi:

So, if you’re ready to go from good to great, just like the coach in this example, then it’s time for your quest! And, today’s quest is a three part, halftime quest. SO – it’s time to go into your mental locker room and do these three things….#1. Assess your performance in the first half. #2. Identify areas for improvement. (and) #3. Set a goal for yourself for the second half of the year. This way, you can come out of that locker room, and into the final half of the year ready to GO! Are you ready?

Kay & Shi:

Let’s quest!
