Kay:
Hey there Questers and welcome back. It’s Tuesday, August 10th and this is episode 417. We have a quote provided today by a dear friend and fellow mentor of ours. Ms. Kelly Merbler. Kelly is an ardent supporter, a friend. She mentors us. She’s a fellow faculty member in the JMT Marketing Solutions Faculty. Kelly, we love you. We’re so proud of you and we’re stoked to feature your quote today.
Shi:
All right, it’s a simple one. “Be a triple threat, confident, courageous, and kind.”
Kay:
Shoo! What a great quote and what a great kind of threat to be.
Shi:
That’s the kind of threat I say, bring it on, and I love the dimensions here. Like ‘confident’. You imagine just someone who has that sureness, that certainty. ‘Courageous’, they’re willing to step up in moments of fear and to defend truth and justice and positive and light. And then ‘kind’. Kind of brings this whole dimension, like ‘confident, courageous, and kind’. Oh, that is what brings the color to this triple threat, the beauty, the fabric, the dimension of what can really come when we become all of these three things.
Kay:
Well, you can be confident, courageous, and sinister.
Shi:
Yep.
Kay:
You can be confident, courageous, and pissed off. You can be confident, courageous, and vengeful. You can be confident, courageous, and really sad. So, there are all kinds of things that could come alongside confident and courageous that coupled with a negative emotion could lead someone to doing something terrible or something that isn’t constructive for themselves or for others. So, bringing in that dimension of kindness, I think adds to that confident and courageousness. Oftentimes Shila, I think you and I get pegged as unkind because we show up with confidence and courage first, and then people make the assumption that kindness isn’t there because confidence and courage are present.
Shi:
That’s what makes it such a beautiful threat. This ‘confident, courageous, and kind’. ‘Kind’ bringing that next dimension to it. Why can’t you be confident and courageous and kind? That’s what we can see will be more successful in playing that infinite game, that striving to make something better, make a difference, something that will outlast you and something that you can be proud of at the end. To be confident, courageous, and cutthroat. There are a lot of people in history who could be described in that way but by ending it with ‘kind’ what a world we can create that could be so different.
Kay:
I can’t help but think Jeffrey Bezos, confident, courageous, and cutthroat. We have plenty of examples of that in our world and Shi, I’m glad that you brought that forward. But the triple threat of confident, courageous, and kind. Now can you be confident without being courageous? Absolutely. You can be sure in yourself or have that self-confidence and think you’re great without having the courage to get out there and maybe talk about it.
Shi:
We knew a prominent business leader who has a lot of confidence, but when it comes to facing difficult conversations or tough choices the courage doesn’t show up. There’s fear there, there’s avoidance, there is this wanting to look away and have others step in. So, when we have confidence without courageous it’s still fine, but not having both of them together can often not make for always a great leader.
Kay:
So, if we can couple confidence and courage together, we find that it can be this unstoppable combo for doing anything, which is how, if you add in that third piece of cutthroat or sinister or anything else, any combination with confidence and courage that can be dangerous, can be a threat in general. So, why not make it a triple threat? Why not add that kindness in there and have it be unsuspecting? One of my favorite things is showing up as confident and courageous and people thinking that we’re going to be mean and then just being so nice, being the most nice.
Shi:
That is definitely part of your core identity. Kay, I’ve always loved and respected that about you, and I think these three things are also part of Kelly’s core identity as well, which is what makes her so memorable and makes her so magnetic for organizations and teams, and leaders to work with, because this is what they want to see reflected. When they look in the mirror, they want to see that kind of person that is able to be all three and they see how threatening that can be. Let’s just treat the word threat here like we’re playing a game like you want to be a threat to the opponent. Whatever that game is you’re playing the game of business, the game of fitness, the game of relationships you’ve got to bring your game. You’ve got to be in the ring and so you want to be a threat to the things that will come along and possibly challenge your ability to win, whatever that means for you and whatever that context is. So, to remind you what Kelly Merbler tells us, “Be a triple threat, confident, courageous, and kind.”
Kay:
Alrighty, guys, it’s Triple Threat Tuesday which means today’s quest is for you to do the quote. Get out there and be a triple threat. Not just confident, not just courageous, not just kind, all three. Get out there and treat today like the champion that you are. Are you ready? Play it with us.
Kay & Shi:
Let’s quest!
