A Daily Scroll: A Mentorship Recap – October 13th 2021 – Show Notes

Kay:

Hey, there Questers welcome back. It’s Wednesday, October 13th which means it’s hump day. You’re getting closer to your weekend. This is episode 463 and today is National Stop Bullying Day. We have a quote for you from Amy Schumer and she says, “We all accept too easily life has to be hard and forget to make sure we have the most fun that we can.”

Shi:

Love that this quote comes from Amy Schumer. In case you are familiar with the name but can’t quite picture her, she’s the American stand-up comedian and actress originally a big breakout coming on to the reality competition of Last Comic Standing. But she’s now been in the comedy industry for a while and is just one of those people that is polarizing and has things to say that can upset others. But hearing a quote like this from her you’ve got to know the criticism that someone like her faces has got to be, I mean, probably overwhelming to most of us.

Kay:

Yes, and understanding that feeling of being able to find the fun where you can, can be the cure to that. So, Amy’s in the public eye, she’s also a normal-sized woman so she is definitely not a stick figure…

Shi:

Supermodel.

Kay:

…or a supermodel which has definitely caught her flack. Then, of course, she gets up there, she’s the comedian so she’s got her public opinion. So yeah, Amy has caught a lot of heat in her day, and here on National Stop Bullying Day, I think she’s giving us some pretty good advice to be getting through if you are being bullied on how to subvert your own anger if you struggle with flare-ups.

Shi:

Well, and I think many of us struggle with flare-ups, with anger from time to time and I appreciate that this quote helps us shine the light on whether or not we’re being bullied or the outside circumstances. Obviously, at a societal level, we’ve got work to do but if you’re loving what is and you think about this concept of one time something happens to you but if you replay that incident over and over and over in your head which one is having more impact on your current state of joy, happiness, fulfillment, all of the positive emotions that we seek. You’re doing that to yourself. If you could keep rewinding the tape and pressing replay on the memory, on the emotion, on the trauma, then it may have happened once to you, but it happens over and over in your head. If this is the bullying piece then you’re being the bully to yourself and not trying to say that from a place of now you’ve got to feel guilty, but from a place of bringing awareness, because I know that concept really struck me, and I think that’s what Amy is striking out here.

Kay:

Well, we can oftentimes make life harder on ourselves. Life is already difficult to go through, but when you’re constantly worrying or causing anxiety within the endless thinking in your head, those kinds of things can really hurt you. We don’t say this from a place of ignorance. We have both been in this space. We both are still working on that incessant voice that continues to bully us in our own dang heads.

Shi:

Your inner bully.

Kay:

Your inner bully.

Shi:

Sometimes your inner cheerleader too.

Kay:

But many of us have a lot of work and we’ve done a lot of work in this realm. So, it can be easy to forget that life also has this really fun side of it too because the experience in your head is the most relevant experience to you in the moment.

Shi:

A couple of key things that I think that she brings forward here. We accept that life has to be hard. It does. Life is hard.

Kay:

Yeah.

Shi:

Living is hard. Being a living biological being…

Kay:

Requires processes. Yeah. It’s heavy.

Shi:

Physical reality just has a lot of requirements. The aches and the pains in your body, the processes, and functions of your intestines.

Kay:

Thank God we have grocery stores because we would have to be always hunting for food.

Shi:

Yeah. 188,000 years of our 200,000 years of existence we’re hunter/gatherers. Then the next 11,750 years we’re farming. So, just 250 years of us existing in the current state where we’ve got so much division of labor and specialization, that we are able to go to the grocery store and just buy whatever we want and spend our time realizing that life does have to be hard. But we’ve progressed and advanced in society enough that we can now have the privilege to choose how we spend the time on the in-between which is why Amy tells us it’s up to us to make sure we have the most fun we can because that’s the big delight, the cherry on top of all of those 200,000 years of progress is that we’re the generations that get to be able to have the time to have fun but we have to make the choice.

Kay:

So, like Amy Schumer tells us, ” We all accept too easily that life has to be hard and forget to make sure we have the most fun we can.”

Shi:

Alright. It’s a Wellness Wednesday Quest for you today. Do something fun with someone else today. Something that will make you laugh or give you joy. Having fun with someone else’s good for you and them and promotes a sense of community and wellbeing especially needed here on National Stop Bullying Day. Are you ready? Fun it with us now.

Kay & Shi:

Let’s quest!
