Kay:
Hey there, Questers, and welcome back! It’s August 19th and this is Episode 163. Today is World Humanitarian Day, so we’ve got a very fitting Mother Teresa quote for you…
Shi:
“If you can’t feed a hundred people, feed just one.”
Kay:
Mother Teresa coming back, letting us know exactly how to get out there and be practical with our servitude!
Shi:
What is she, a Mother Teresa? Ohh…
Kay:
Oh, wait, is she a saint?!
Kay & Shi:
*(Laughter)*
Shi:
It’s actually the actual Mother Teresa, so this is advice that we should heed. And, you don’t become a Mother Teresa until you feed one person at a time, until you care for one human being at a time. And, here today on World Humanitarian Day, who better to celebrate with, and feature a quote that’s about helping humans than Mother Teresa?
Kay:
I believe that Mother Teresa has even been upgraded into Saint Teresa now – making her one of the most newly sainted people into the Roman Catholic church! She’s just an amazing human being. I heard once that Mother Teresa is so good at attracting wealth that she has literally attracted billions of dollars and given it all away to help people. So, a perfect person to be supporting on this World Humanitarian Day!
Shi:
I love that example because it shows that it’s not about “money equals evil.” It really is about, if good people can get money, then they can help do more good things. And, she certainly did a lot of great things with the money and the wealth that she was able to attract and the resources that she was able to deploy and help. And, in this quote here, she tells us if you can’t feed a hundred people, feed just one!
Kay:
It’s an encouraging quote because, oftentimes, we carry the weight of the world around on us, right? Especially in the current, connected world of media, you see all the problems that are happening across the globe, and it seems like everything is going wrong, and leaves you thinking, “What’s the point of even trying because the problems are so huge.” I mean, give me an ‘amen’ if you ever feel like that!
Shi:
Right?!
Kay:
Like, “Amen” – I know I certainly do! So, bringing it back to that idea that charity starts at home. It really does start with the person in front of you. Love thy neighbor. If we all just fed one person, we could help feed the entire world, and that’s where we really can get empowered from this quote!
Shi:
Well, a lot of people think that a little bit of giving can’t make a difference. Like, “Well, I have this extra $5 that I could potentially give to that charity, but that’s not really going to make a difference so I’m not going to do that.” Or, “Oh, giving away my lunch or buying extra food at the fast food station for the homeless man on the corner isn’t really going to make that big of a difference.” But, you never know when one person IS that big difference. And so, those tiny acts accumulating over the course of time equal a life of great servitude!
Kay:
Mother Teresa served people one person at a time. It started that way for her, through washing feet, and feeding homeless people, and working in her soup kitchens, and doing all that stuff. So, she really did begin to change the world one space at a time. And, I think many of us can get out there and we’re like, “Well, I just really have to solve the homeless problem and so I’m going to start a charity for homeless people.” And then, before we know it, we’ve fallen into a trap that we might not be aware of…
Shi:
Right! Building a bureaucracy, and starting a business, and being responsible for all these things, and making these connections takes a lot of work. And, chances are there’s a bunch of other organizations already doing that, that you could plug into and make a difference (without all that extra work and funds)! And then, you really could help feed a hundred people rather than just one. So, although that idea comes from such a good place, oftentimes we try and take that weight of the world on ourselves and end up creating more work that doesn’t drive us in the direction of where our desire was leading us in the first place. So, it’s helpful to have that reminder of really keeping things focused on what we can do individually on the one-on-one basis!
Kay:
Tony Robbins has this great story about being 11 years old and living in poverty. And, his mom has this cycle of stepfathers, and the stepfather is horrible. And, on Thanksgiving Day, they have no money and they have no food and strangers knock on the door and they deliver food. And, it’s this transformational moment for Tony Robbins! And, he realizes within himself that people care. And, from that, he’s now started this Basket Brigade that has served hundreds of millions of people across the world from the last few decades. And so, he continues to have more and more impact. So, talk about feeding one person turning into something SO much bigger…I mean, that story right there demonstrates this principle and practice!
Shi:
Well, you never think that (by being the enthusiastic volunteer for the Thanksgiving Charity down the street) – you may be inspiring the next Tony Robbins to go out and change billions of lives across the globe! So, that could be YOU – get out there and find that way to make that difference here on World Humanitarian Day.
Kay:
All right, just to remind you, your Mother Theresa quote for today is, “If you can’t feed a hundred people, feed just one.”
Shi:
That’s right! And, today is a humanitarian quest, which means, we want to know: What human can you get out there and feed today (that’s not you)? It could be a friend, a grandparent, a kid, or maybe it’s that homeless person on the corner…And, maybe you just go into a fast food place, pick up an extra $5 meal for them and drop it off! You’ll never realize just how much of a difference you could make with one small meal! Are you ready?
