The Daily Scroll: A Mentorship Recap – December 30th, 2020 Show Notes

Kay:

Hey there Questers and welcome back. It’s Wednesday, December 30th, New Year’s Eve, Eve episode 258 here for you in weird week, the week between Christmas and New Years! We have such a cool quote for you today from a personal (S)hero of ours, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Shi:

She tells us, “Don’t take your health for granted. Don’t take your body for granted. Do something today that communicates to your body that you desire to care for it. Tomorrow is not promised.”

Kay:

Man, I love this fierce, fierce woman. She’s an actress, a screenwriter, a talk show host, and a businesswoman. She began her acting career early. She was a little bit in the short-lived sitcom True Colors and starred in the television series A Different World and of course, that third name in her lineup of names is because she is married to the one and only Will Smith. But I want to have that be her final qualification because it does not define this one BA woman.

Shi:

Well, this quote certainly does because she’s reminding us to be present, to be disciplined, to be healthy. There’s so much in this quote and it comes at such power. I know before we started recording, Kay, you and I were talking particularly about this middle phrase here, “Do something today that communicates to your body that you desire to care for it.” That is just excellent wordplay and excellent meaning and excellent messaging in order to really demonstrate and bring home the power of the intention behind this thought.

Kay:

Well, a couple of years ago, it kind of blew my mind in considering that the body has its own form of communication. Your body is constantly communicating to you. It just doesn’t communicate in words. As a human, you hear the word communication, and you think that’s an exchange of words, but the body communicates in feelings and it communicates in “how is my emotional state.” It communicates in chemical soups to make you feel certain ways. It communicates in hunger pangs when you need to go get something or thirst when you need to hydrate. Your body is communicating constantly so if your body is physical and it’s communication to you as the mental, spiritual being, then your communication to your body also has to be physical in the choices that you make and how you move and what your intake is.

Shi:

Right. How do you sleep, how you move, what you eat, what you drink, all of those things are the primary communicators to our body? So, sometimes we can find ourselves in the trap of well, my body is betraying me, or my body doesn’t love me. We would maybe challenge that a little bit and encourage you to see how you’re communicating back to your body. It doesn’t mean you don’t get in fights with your body. We all do. If you were with us a couple of months ago, I got in a fight with my shoulder. I had some calcium deposits that needed a cortisone shot to take care of it. But communicating on a regular basis, what you desire for your body to know means drinking water, eating healthy, getting good sleep, being balanced, being active, and really those simple things right there.

Kay:

Do you know what is a desire that I have had in my mental state for a long time for my body that I haven’t enacted in that physical communication is the desire for flexibility, just more physical flexibility. I would like my muscles to be more flexible and I actually engaged in, I think the opposite of flexible type exercising, which is cross-training. So, it’s literally jarring near the system and can create tightness if you’re not also having some form of stretching program. But recently we’ve really leaned into the power of dance fitness. So, in the last month, I’ve done a lot of exercise through dance which creates more flexibility in your body. I’m seeing the fruits of that in the body. So, by communicating the intent and that desire for that flexibility to my body through physical action, the body responds by giving me that desire in my physical form.

Shi:

It’s like any other relationship that you have. It’s this give and take and if you treat your partner in a relationship well and thoughtfully and caring, your body will reciprocate that and you’re the one that gets to be in the driver’s seat. So, you can make some real changes towards health and get a way better relationship with your body when you start communicating that you desire to care for it.

Kay:

Just a reminder for you. Today’s quote is from Miss. Jada Pinkett Smith and says, “Don’t take your health for granted. Don’t take your body for granted. Do something today that communicates to your body that you desire to care for it. Tomorrow is not promised.”

Shi:

Alright. That brings us to your weird week, #WorkoutWednesday quest. Alright, just like Jada says, “Do something today that communicates to your body that you desire to care for it.” So, maybe you want to be like Kay and do some stretching. Maybe you want to go for a walk around the block. Maybe you want to drink a nice big glass of water right now. Whatever it is, communicate to your body in the way that it communicates with action, not with words. Are you ready?

Kay & Shi:

Let’s quest!
