The Daily Scroll: A Mentorship Recap – July 13th, 2021 Show Notes

Kay:

Well, hello there Questers. Today is July 13th and this is Episode 397. We’ve got a quote for you today that comes from one of our newest favorite Pixar movies, the movie, Soul, and this comes from our very favorite main character: Joe Gardener.

Shi:

Who tells us, “Life is full of possibilities. You just need to know where to look.”

Kay:

We love this movie.

Shi:

It’s so good.

Kay:

It has so many levels. I mean, it is filled with soul.

Shi:

It truly is..And rhythm and blues and beautiful music co-composed by Jon Batiste, an incredible modern-day musician and actually an Academy Award winner for this soundtrack. So, congratulations to the entire team of Soul for your amazing music and this line helps illustrate how some of the lyrics weren’t sung, they were spoken.

Kay:

Well, Joe in the movie is a middle school band teacher whose life hasn’t quite always gone the way that he had expected. His true passion is jazz and he’s really good at it. But when he travels to another realm to help someone find their passion, he soon discovers what it means to have soul. It’s really incredible to watch the way in the movie that the character of Joe Gardner goes from accepting his life as is to living his life on purpose.

Shi:

Then when he gets this crazy perspective shift, he is able to make that connection and that understanding. Of course, tragically we’re talking about death here and so he dies and so there’s this overtone tone of that loss, of never getting to have the opportunities back or getting to go back and live it to the fullest, of not understanding this basic concept that life is full of possibilities. Our business partner, mentor, and dear friend Joseph McClendon says, “Once in a lifetime opportunities happen about every two weeks, if you’re open to them and if you can see them.” Now, the opportunity is free, the journey is not. We like to talk about that a lot. There’s a lot that goes into that but there are possibilities everywhere and as your perspective opens, widens, and becomes more inviting, you know where to look from an intuitive sense.

Kay:

Well, Joe Gardner, the middle school band teacher had accepted his life up until the point as it was. He felt like there weren’t possibilities for him. He had been denied his dream of being a jazz musician and he blamed a lot of outside circumstances for the lack of action that he took on his part in that. But what we do know is that, if you tune into us often you’ll remember, just as Beyonce told us last week, it’s really important that a winner doesn’t quit on themselves.

Shi:

That you carry that torch and I agree with you. I don’t think that the hustle culture of, “do it until you die,” should be embraced ad nauseum. I think that it is extremely sage advice for the person who says, I have a freaking burning desire to do something. Then the message of hustle your butt off does apply to those people who just want it and want it so bad. I think that’s where we should be making differentiation in this society. If you desire something or you think it might be nice or you are willing to have a longer timeline then, “work till your eyes bleed” is not a healthy message for you.

Kay:

Nope.

Shi:

But if you’re like, I’ll do whatever it takes, and you’ve got that level of intensity about it then focus that and drive it towards what it is that you want to achieve. Whatever your level of intensity is, you should focus on it and drive it towards what it is that you want to achieve. But you shouldn’t just blindly accept hustle until your eyes bleed because that is not healthy.

Kay:

No passion-fueled hustle looks really different than hustle for hustle sake.

Shi:

Yeah.

Kay:

Life, like Joe Gardner, says here is full of possibilities and in this movie, he comes through a full transformation from being someone who feels like his life wasn’t full of possibilities to seeing them everywhere and eventually gaining his dream. So, as a reminder of what Joe Gardner tells us here in the movie Soul, “Life is full of possibilities. You just need to know where to look.”

Shi:

Okay, it’s a Soul Possibilities Quest. Today we want to challenge you to expand your spirit and your understanding of what’s possible by taking a new route home, whether you walk or drive to work, the grocery store, your kid’s school.
