Shi:

That’s correct! It is our dad’s birthday, which means, of course, today’s quote is going to be for him! But, trust me, you will all find value in it too. But, rather than read it to you, we’re going to play it for you. So…tune in 😉

And, just in case you couldn’t hear the lyrics and what they said, or maybe because you were just too pumped up from the song. The lyrics go, “The good book says it’s better to give than to receive. I do my best to do my part…
Shi:
Nothin’ in my pockets, I got nothin’ up my sleeve. I keep my magic in my heart.” This is from the song, “Fight The Good Fight”, by Triumph.
Kay:
Now, this is one of our dad’s favorite bands and favorite songs. And, one of those songs that our parents would just play over, and over, and over, and OVER again, right in the very beginning of their entrepreneurial journey with the Squeeze In restaurant. So, when I was 10 and Shi was 17, our Mom and Dad bought this little, tiny restaurant up in Truckee, California… and it was freaking hard. I mean, it still is really freaking hard. But, in the beginning we had no idea what we were doing, and the whole family needed empowerment…and Triumph brought it!
Shi:
They did! This song helped us find a triumph in each and every day, and to fight the good fight of learning a family business from the ground up, and truly living the American dream in scrapper mode…which can be terrifying. But, we made it through, and it’s in large part, thanks to the birthday boy today…which, of course, is our DAD!
Kay:
Aww! So, in honor of our dad, we’ve got one of his favorite quotes, from one of his favorite songs, from one of his favorite bands. But, the quote says that, “The good book says” (AKA: The Bible) “says it’s better to give than it is to receive. I do my best to do my part.” And, if there was someone who truly displayed this for us in our life, it was our dad.
Shi:
Well, both of our parents, but, in particular, our dad would really go out of his way to find ways to give back, to help those in need, to find struggle, and to bring aid to it. And, this has manifested in lots of different ways, including people living with our family through the years, anonymous donations, adopting families at Christmas, etc. But, one thing that our dad in particular really likes to do is to find a homeless person, or a family down on their luck, randomly in the streets, and give them a gift out of his wallet. He carries specific money, just for this reason, and so that he can – in his own words – “find Jesus”.
Kay:
And, when he finds Jesus, he blesses him, through finding that beauty in another human being. And, it’s so fun that we always get to be the recipients of the regaling, when that happens!
Shi:
“I found Jesus today!” – he’ll say.
Kay:
And then, the stories are always so beautiful. And, we’ve heard everything from men yelling “thank you” from the middle of a field, to people busting out in tears. And, our dad has always been the kind who’s done this. So, that’s the first part of this quote. And, the second part of this quote is, “Nothin’ in my pockets. I got nothin’ up my sleeve. I keep my magic in my heart.” Now, there’s so much to unpack here, but our parents really started out with nothing in their pockets, from a very literal perspective. And then, to me, “nothing up my sleeve” really means I have really pure intentions. Like, I’m not here with anything fake up my sleeve to deceive you…But, I’m really here to LOVE, because my magic pours from my heart…
Shi:
Right? It’s indicative of true and real magic, not sleight of hand magic, something up your sleeve, or in your pocket magic…This is about that real magic of life! And, it can be found in the heart and only expressed through acts of giving, which then leads to the receiving. So, there’s no sleight of hand magic here. It’s heartfelt magic. And, you find that magic when you’re giving, rather than receiving, and continuing to do your part and give to that flow. So, just to remind you of that lyric for Dad’s birthday, one more time, “The good book says it’s better to give than to receive. I do my best to do my part.”
Kay:
