Kay:
Hey there Questers, and welcome to Episode 122! We’ve got a quote for you today from George Bernard Shaw, and he says, “Life isn’t about finding yourself. It is about creating yourself.”
Shi:
A short quote, and a simple quote, but there’s so much value here and it’s really cool to hear from such a prolific and profound creator himself, on this interesting notion of creating yourself as perhaps a character in a play would!
Kay:
You know, what I love about George Bernard Shaw saying this, is that he created the play that then turned into My Fair Lady. And, if you’re going to talk about somebody creating themselves, there’s no better example of that then in My Fair Lady – where a woman literally gets created into something new. And so, when we’re thinking about finding yourself versus creating yourself, I think we’ve got a great source here. And, George Bernard Shaw, who actually insisted that he be called just Bernard Shaw…(So George…I mean, BERNARD…If you’re listening from heaven, know we call you Bernard 🙂
Kay & Shi:
*(Laughter)*
Shi:
We’re sorry that history has tacked back on your first name, and everyone now knows you as George Bernard Shaw – Nobel prize winner, known socialist, and a vital player in the blending of comedy and drama – which went on to define the drama-dy (AKA: drama + comedy) sector that we know today!
Kay:
Yes! So, let’s talk a little bit about this quote itself, because I couldn’t help but chuckle when we were prepping for this podcast around this notion of finding yourself – and thinking about how many people would say, “You know, I’m going to go on a spiritual journey, because I have to find myself.” Like…Are you gonna find yourself in Tibet? Or, are you down the street? Or like, I don’t know, where are you?
Kay & Shi:
*(Laughter)*
Shi:
Right?! Like, I’ll save you four grand right now, cause you’re sitting right in front of me! And that’s exactly what Bernard is alluding to right here. Like, you can’t go find yourself. You’re not OUT there. You already have everything right inside of you that you need to become the person that you want to be! And, I think what people really mean when they say they’re going to go find themselves is that they’re really looking to feel in alignment. They want to feel flow. They want to feel good. They want to feel like they’re on purpose, and they’re passionate, and they’re contributing to something that’s significant and impactful…And, in this quote, Bernard’s illuminating the fact that you won’t necessarily find that “out there” – because it’s inside of you. And, it’s up to you to do the work to continually create yourself, for yourself…
Kay:
I love that you said we’re all equipped with everything that we need inside already. Because, we truly are equipped with everything that we need to create ourselves. It doesn’t mean that you are equipped with all of the things right now, but you’re at least equipped with the resourcefulness to find those resources that you need in order to create that person. So, you have it in you to take the steps in the right direction. And, maybe, if there’s a place in your life where you’re thinking to yourself, “I’ve got to find out who I am”, and you’re thinking that that journey exists somewhere outside of you, it might be time to take an approach to the problem, through a journey within…
Kay & Shi:
*(Echo)* …within (within) (within)…
Kay & Shi:
*(Laughter)*
Shi:
Yep! You’re getting spiritual on this one, but that’s what it takes! This is about turning that lens inward, and figuring out what it is that you want. Because, once you figure out who you want to be, then you can go about applying that resourcefulness and moving in the direction towards creating that person. Because, you’re the only one who can create it, and has the power to do so. We all agree that human potential is unlimited. There is no cap on what the human spirit can create, do, endure, or thrive in. And so, it’s up to you, as your own personal expression, to figure out what that is for YOU, and create yourself as this magnificent masterpiece that gets one lifetime to figure that out, and make something out of it! And, it’s not out there. It’s inside of you…
Kay:
Well, if you are waiting for someone else to create that beautiful masterpiece, or if you think that someone has put something on this planet that is so wildly uniquely you, then you’ve got to get out there and find it. And, THIS is your wake up call! This is your opportunity to take a little bit of a look at that belief, and see if you can create yourself from within. I mean, even one of our favorite speakers, Tony Robbins, says something about people thinking he built Tony Robbins overnight and found him somewhere. And, Tony responds like – NO WAY! I created this guy! I became him! Step-by-step, hour by hour, minute by minute! Just like George Bernard Shaw, when he says, “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
Shi:
All right! That brings us to your quest for today. And, your quest is: Create something today to remind yourself of who you are, where it is that you’re headed, or who you want to be. So, maybe you want to make a vision board…Maybe, you want to write a little encouragement note and put it on your mirror, as a reminder…Maybe you want to print out a picture of a place you want to go, or a goal you want to accomplish! Whatever it may be for you, create something today to remind you who it is that you’re trying to create – so that you can see it more clearly and move in that direction! Are you ready?
Kay & Shi:
Let’s quest!
