The Daily Scroll: A Mentorship Recap – June 24th, 2021 Show Notes

Kay:

Well, hello. Questers, I want to ring bells. I want to blow a horn. I want to jump up and down and celebrate, celebrate, because today is Thursday, June 24th, and it is the anniversary of the day that my most favorite human being graced this planet, the one, and only Shila Morris. It is her birthday, and it happens to be episode 384 but before we get into today’s special edition birthday episode Shi, I love you. Happy birthday!

Shi:

Thank you so much sis and for all of those kind words. Excited to be here with you guys today on my birthday. You guys are such a special part to both Kay and I, but here on my birthday, the real gift is that you’re listening. I just want to birthday-apologize to you in advance because you are not about to have any personal growth or development happen whatsoever. We are going to share with you my favorite line from my favorite movie and it is just witty and funny, and it comes amongst a well-executed, extremely excellent cinematic back and forth between two greats – Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye in the movie, “White Christmas.” This is an exchange between Phil Davis and Bob Wallace, the famous producers who are in the musical and I will read it, beginning with Phil Davis and rounding out with the Bob Wallace reply, and then we can talk a little bit about it. But Phil Davis says, “When what’s left of you gets around to what’s left to be gotten, what’s left to be gotten won’t be worth getting, whatever it is you’ve got left.”

Kay:

“When I figure out what that means, I’ll come up with a crushing reply.”

Shi:

So funny. Phil is trying to convince Bob that he needs to get out and get a wife. And he tells him if you could just have nine kids and spend five minutes a day with each kid that would at least give me 45 minutes all to myself. They are hardworking but Bob Wallace is an extremely hardworking producer and Phil is tired of it and wants him to meet a girl and settle down and this exchange happens, and it is just so beautiful. So, if you’ve yet to see “White Christmas” this season, make sure it makes it onto your list. It is a cinematic beauty and a great classic movie.

Kay:

Well, in today’s special edition episode, we are talking about things that Shila loves very specifically and are excited to get into it. So, I had to start off with a non-inspirational quote that Shila loves. When I had asked her, why did you pick this? She says, “Well, first off, it’s hilarious, and second, it’s very clever.” Hilarious and clever are two things that Shila is, and has so many wonderful qualities about you but one of the things that Shila loves that I love about her is for love of sociology. No, sociology and psychology are not the same things as I thought for the first 20 years of my life. Sociology is the study of the macro look at humans. Humans, as an organism, and how the groups interact with one another really from this mass standpoint. So, Shi, you love sociology so much now you even teach it.

Shi:

That’s true. Yes. I’ve taken a job at the University of Nevada Reno. Not a job, it’s a position as an instructor of Sociology 101. So, I completed my first semester just this last month here and it was such a joy. Sociology for me, as I was kind of bumbling around taking my college courses, I sat in the back of Soc. 101. It was like 200 students and my mind began to open up to how much more influences our lives than simply our own stamina and determination. Yes, that is what we preach here on the Mentorship Quest primarily, which is a psychological bend towards things. But truly sociology looks at how we act as human beings within societies and how we interact with the structure of society. It was just absolutely fascinating to me then, and it still is now, and I adore teaching it. As you could hear from the quote, “White Christmas.” I love the movie because I love the holiday Christmas and always have but I also love musicals and always have. Grew up on “Grease”, loved “Moulin Rouge.” A huge, I mean, if you don’t know me…

Kay: “Bye Bye Birdie”

Shi:

Yeah. Ginormous fans of “Hamilton,” “Bye Bye Birdie.” There are so many. “Chicago,” just love musicals. So, those are a few of my favorite things that I love!

Kay:

I can’t let a few of your favorite thing’s podcasts go by without talking about one of the reasons that I end up losing you in areas in which we travel. So, I want you to just imagine you’re on an afternoon with your sister and you’re walking down a lovely lane. You’re in a beautiful place where there are lots of different shops and you’re having a gay old time and you look at your sister next to you and suddenly she’s gone and you don’t know where she is and you look around and you look around and oh, you find a nearby bakery. Well, of course, you would find your sister inside said bakery because my sister, if she’s anything like your sister, in this imaginary situation would be found at a bakery counter. Now, Shi, you are notorious for loving bakery counters. When I travel without you, I find them for you. So, tell us, what is it about a good bakery counter?

Shi:

Come on gang. You know you love a good bakery counter. That glass counter case with all of the beautiful confections displayed so nicely and you can imagine all the different flavors dancing in your mouth, and they’re decorated to perfection. It’s true. I love a good bakery counter. Disney has incredible bakery counters. I think the biggest bakery counter I’ve ever seen is at the Albertsons in Eagle, Idaho. It might have been over the border in Boise, they’re very close to each other. But it’s where Albertsons was born. So, we went into this giant experience of an Albertsons that is not just a market. It is an experience, and their bakery counter was huge. I think we spent 20 minutes there. I took like 200 photos. I was obsessed with that bakery counter and something that goes along with bakery counters that I also love is I am a very olfactory-driven person. I love good smells. I am all about that smell of a summer morning, the smell of a bakery or bread, or the smell of a Christmas tree. So, those are a few things that I love, and I hope that you loved hearing just a little bit about those things here on my birthday.

Kay:
