The Daily Scroll: A Mentorship Recap – June 30th, 2020 Show Notes

Kay:

Hey, hey gang! We’ve got Episode 127 here today, and – it is the final day in the month of June – which means half of the year is already over! And, in order to give you the best beginning (almost half of the year) quote, we’ve got a quote from the old Tommy Eddie for you today!

Shi:

Yes! Thomas Edison says, “The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.”

Kay:

Yep – Tommy Eddie coming at ya!

Kay & Shi:

*(Laughter)*

Shi:

Tommy Eddie bringing us a nutrition quote today! And, this is a good time to be reminded of the importance of nutrition and our own relationship with our health and fitness. Because, it’s certainly here in the U S of A, where we’re seeing these honestly terrifying trends when it comes to health and nutrition. And, seeing then the subsequent diseases and decay that is happening within families, and within people, and within bodies, makes this quote even more poignant.

Kay:

Well, I think what’s so interesting about this quote is that Thomas Edison was around and really kickin’ it like a hundred years ago. And, actually it’s been like 130 years since Thomas Edison was really on the scene and a man making waves and doing things. So, here he is 130 years ago saying that, “The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs.” And, we’re still treating the human frame with drugs…

Shi:

Well, I don’t think he realized that the pharmaceutical industry of the future was going to be quite so profitable for the system. And, he probably also didn’t see that the modern way of creating food would be quite so profitable in our current capitalistic system as well. And so, we’ve got a couple of industries that make a whole lot of money off of keeping us unhealthy, which means we have to actively work at keeping ourselves healthy. Something that has always stuck with me, that I heard early on in high school, was that 70% of your health and fitness results come from what you put in your body, (AKA : your nutrition), and 30% is how you work your body. So, you could kill yourself in the gym for four hours a day. But, if you are on the standard American diet, the other 20 hours of the day, it’s not going to turn out great for your body.

Kay:

Well, we’ve seen a huge trend move toward plant-based options. And, there is a movie that came out at the beginning of this year called Game Changers, which I know changed a lot of people’s thinking in regards to the importance of meat, and the importance of animal products. And, someone who’s been a real leader in our lives in this particular area is our mom. (She’s also one of our very first podcast supporters and listeners!) So – Hi, Mom – love you! And, she has recently started a program called My Nutrition Nurse, where they’re actually helping people to learn how to live in a whole food, plant based, environment, and how to create that environment in their own lives!

Shi:

Something that we’ve always admired about our mom is that she takes action on things that she’s passionate about. And so, we can sit here and talk about the T Eddie quote that says (in short) nutrition is good for you, yo! And, that nutrition is more important for keeping your healthy body than any kind of drug, or doctor regimen would be. But, our mom doesn’t just percolate on quotes…She takes action. And, the fact that she found a nutrition nurse that  transformed her, as well as our Dad’s, health and fitness lifestyle, is really inspiring. And, after seeing that, she then said, “How do we develop a program to do that for others in a really inspiring and cool way?” And, we’re SO proud of her for it.

Kay:

Now, if you’ve been a longtime podcast listener, you know that Shila and I have given up meat for 2020, and we’re not encouraging you to not eat meat, or to eat one way or another. But, we are encouraging you to be thinking about this quote, and the fact that your food and the nutrition that you put in your body can literally help you to prevent disease. I mean, the people who are at the most risk of dying from coronavirus are those with heart disease, and diabetes, and other underlying conditions. And, many of those underlying conditions are preventative, and preventable, if you engage in solid nutrition!

Shi:

The thing that’s so hard is that nutrition has to happen every single day, and every few hours. You’ve gotta be thinking about what to put in your body. And, it’s so easy to want the salty, snacky food, or the sweet, crunchy, highly processed, sugary food. So, it can be a battle! And certainly, if you’ve got bad habits, then it’s a battle to get out of those for sure. And, look – Kay and I are no saints. We had to battle our own urge to get french fries for the second day in a row, today for lunch. And, we were able to say no to it and stick with our healthy meals. But, we both admitted that was hard. We actively had to say, “I really want French fries.”

Kay:

Oh, I almost even snuck some French fries while I was picking up the food from the restaurant before I got here! But, I had to actively tell myself NOT to do that.

Shi:

Oh my gosh, that’s funny! All right…So, to remind you of T Eddie (also known as Thomas Edison’s) quote, “The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.”

Kay:

That means that today’s quest is a food quest, gang! SO – Ask yourself, where could your relationship with nutrition improve? And then, get out there and eat one raw fruit or vegetable today that you don’t normally eat, to give yourself a little nutrition boost! Now, remember, this is something you don’t normally eat. So, if you have your apple a day, then you’ve got to eat a banana instead, and get out there – and get healthy! Are you ready?
