The Daily Scroll: A Mentorship Recap – March 29th, 2021 Show Notes

Kay:

Hey, Questers welcome back. It’s Money Monday, March 29th and this is episode 321. How fun is that.

Shi:

Right. Blast off!

Kay:

We’ve got such a cool quote for you today here on Money Monday, we’re going to focus on abundance from Mr. George Lorimer.

Shi:

George tells us. “It’s good to have money and the things that money can buy, but it’s good too, to check up once in a while and make sure that you haven’t lost the things that money can’t buy.”

Kay:

Now, George is a historical figure, best known as the editor of the Saturday Evening Post which he led from 1899 to 1836. So, during that 37-year reign, the Post rose from a circulation of several thousand and more than 1 million. Now, it is a publication that I don’t believe is around anymore but seeing the rise and fall of something like that, you know, a rise like that takes a great leader.

Shi:

We’re right and that leader over those almost 40 years, taking it to a circulation that big, certainly made a lot of money and certainly had a lot of influence. I think that this quote helps highlight the fact that so many others highlight as well, especially once they get to that kind of successful rung of society and they realize that their day-to-day experience isn’t as impacted by the amount of money in their bank account that they thought it would when there wasn’t money in there.

Kay:

Right. Isn’t it an interesting life irony, how many people will get everything they ever wanted and still end up unhappy?

Shi:

It hurts. It’s kind of like the saying, “Money can’t buy you happiness, but everybody wants to find out for themselves.” It seems like a lot of people follow that track of chasing money and I know I’ve certainly fallen into that as well and getting this reminder that if you get all the riches, that still day to day experience like we were just talking about is what will be the decider of your satisfaction of life. So, finding ways to enjoy that day-to-day internal experience and surroundings is one of the juiciest ways you can remind yourself of the things that matter outside of money.

Kay:

Whether you wake up in a mansion with a down comforter in a beautiful bed and walk the 100 feet over to your bathroom, or you wake up in a one-bedroom house and walk the three feet over to your bathroom, that internal experience is the same. The conversation that gets had inside the head that walks on the top of the body, from the bed to the bathroom, likely isn’t that much different. So, really governing that internal experience. So, let’s think about the things that money can’t buy. Really when it comes down to it, money can’t buy… ‘Can’t buy me…’

Kay & Shi:

‘Love.’

Kay:

‘Money can’t buy me, love.’

Shi:

No, no, no, no.

Kay:

Can’t buy you a connection. Can’t buy you, love.

Shi:

And it can’t buy you time. Now it can certainly buy you the tools to help with all of those things, but it can’t buy the actual emotional feeling. Really, as we’ve studied wealth and talked more about it, realizing that the emotional feeling around money, around finance, around what you think it means or doesn’t mean about your worth or your value can often be heavier or more significant than the actual dollar signs themselves. There’s a lot hung up in money and finance and that emotional feeling that goes with that and realizing that if you only focus on that then you can let those other things like connection, like love, like enjoying a moment or an ice cream sandwich or Saturday night dance or whatever it is. You might miss those things and it’s those little moments that become big moments that become the treasured memories of our lives. So, reminding ourselves of this fact, I think helps just bring that texture and dimension back to our lives.

Kay:

If you’ve quested with us for some time, I believe it was last week or the week before that we talked about how often in popular media, the villain is portrayed as a rich person and the hero is portrayed as a poor person. There is something about that realization that has really struck me personally over these last couple of weeks and understanding that maybe I have some emotional ties around money that say money equals bad or having money equals a bad person that might be holding back my abundance today.

Shi:

That’s a great realization and reflection to have and I think exactly what this quote gets to, to remind ourselves that there is more to life than money and that money doesn’t have to equal bad. I like even when George says, “It’s good to check up once in a while and make sure you haven’t lost the things that money can’t buy,” because money can sure buy a lot. If you are a good person and you get more money, as was the point of last Monday’s podcast that Kay is referring to, you can do more good things with that money. There are plenty of bad people doing bad stuff with money. So, we want good people equipped with money doing good things and living their lives for more than just that money. It’s a tall order, but you are Questers, and we know you can do it.

Kay:

Alright, questers so today you’ve got a Honey-Money-Monday Quest.

Kay & Shi:

Honey Money Monday.

Shi:

Honey Money Monday!

Kay:

#HoneyMoneyMonday. I am into that. So, for a fun spin on our Money Monday Quest today, we want you to, instead of looking for your money, go out and look for those honeys. This could be through appreciating your actual honey at home or admiring any other non-monetary element of this life that brings you some of that energizing, sweet nectar of life just like honey does. Are you ready?

Kay & Shi:

Let’s quest!
