Kay:
Heyo Questers welcome back. It’s Wednesday here May 19th, and this is episode 358. Today’s quote comes from the queen of cooking herself, Miss Julia Child and she says, “Moderation. Small helpings. Sample a little bit of everything. These are the secrets of happiness and good health.”
Shi:
Clearly, a famous chef. She’s talking about food here and alluding that these apply to so much more. That’s what I absolutely love about some of these timeless quotes that are vague and broad enough, and yet specific and imagery-filled enough to give us just good plain advice here. But love those. Even in her presentation of this advice, she is demonstrating the principle. “Moderation. Small helpings. Sample a little bit of everything. These are the secrets of happiness and good health.” So, just love the lyrical congruences there as well as the advice included.
Kay:
One quote, four sentences and there are many countries and cultures. If you are one of our United States listeners, hello, we have an international audience here on the Mentorship Quest which is amazing. So, if you are international, then you guys are much more used to this idea of sampling many small things between all the people at the table. But here in the US you pretty much get your one thing that either gets shared between everyone or the one thing that gets given to the singular person in a meal situation. A lot of countries have benefited, and their people have benefited from the culture of, in Spain, they call it tapas which are just smaller portions of many things.
Shi:
That happens to be the preferred eating style of Kay and I, although we like lots of small plates of many things. So, working on that may be small or the…
Kay:
Helpings.
Shi:
…moderation piece. The small helpings we can do but we sure like to have a lot of them. But you know, I love here that there is that encouragement to not get stuck on one thing, or maybe not gorge on a giant thing, and too much of anything can be a bad thing. This helps us come back to that cliche idea that “Variety is the spice of life.” It’s one of those things that adds so much flavor when we can see different things and try different things and keep things fresh and novel and exciting. It’s also what Tony Robbins identifies as a basic human need. This need for a little bit of uncertainty, a little bit of spontaneity, a little bit of variety in our lives, both in our pallets while we’re eating and in our experiences in life.
Kay:
I’m sure that many of you felt very similar to the way that we did during the COVID-19 shutdowns of 2020, where, by week 12 and a half, you’re like, man, I could just use something other than my community, other than my house, other than the mask in the grocery store because we have, at least in our lives we had quite a bit of variety that was going on prior to that. Lack of variety in the placement due to no travel was a bit of a head adjustment after having been used to seeing such a variety of places so often. Staying in one spot for so long was difficult and weird and I’m sure many of you experienced that same thing as well. So, a lot of the same can be really tedious which is one of the reasons that variety is so dang helpful when it comes to creating like Julia tells us, “…happiness and good health.”
Shi:
I remember going to Idaho for the opening of The Squeeze there, and it just felt so fun to be on a plane.
Kay:
So fun.
Shi:
Ran outside in a different community. That was just a really memorable trip.
Kay:
Like who are we?
Shi:
It would be a run-of-the-mill trip in pre-2020 times. So, to remind you of what Julia Child tells us that is, “Moderation. Small helpings. Sample a little bit of everything. These are the secrets of happiness and good health.”
Kay:
Alrighty, gang. We have a Wellness Wednesday Quest. Today we want you to eat in the way that Julia Child would. Sample a little bit of everything, be that your protein, your carbs, your foods, your fats, with a special focus on small portion sizes, and just see how you feel at the end of the day.
Shi:
Buffet day.
Kay:
Are you ready? You know what to do…
Kay & Shi:
Let’s quest!
