The Daily Scroll: A Mentorship Recap – May 22nd, 2020

Kay:

Well, hey Questers! Welcome to a very special episode…because this is EPISODE 100!

Kay & Shi:

*(Horn Sounds)*

Kay:

It’s like our Centurion episode!

Shi:

Right? I feel like…three digits…We’re SO super old!

Kay:

We’re not going to be out of the three digits and into four digits for another three years of mentorship questing! So, we’re really glad that you guys are with us, and thank you for getting out of the singles, out of the doubles, and into the triple digits with us!

Shi:

So fun! And so, today’s quote is completely appropriate for this 100th episode, and it comes to us from Mr. Benjamin Franklin, who says, “Work as if you were to live a hundred years. Pray as if you were to die tomorrow.”

Kay:

Now, this quote is really apt in so many different ways. First off, because he says, “work as if you were to live a hundred years”, and…this is our 100th episode! And, second, Mr Ben Franklin, is ON a one hundred dollar bill!

Shi:

The BENJAMINS!

Kay:

So, if you want to get out there and spend a hundred bucks, you’re going to spend a couple of Benjamins!

Kay & Shi:

*(Laughter)*

Shi:

Exactly. So we got layers on our references here today, but it doesn’t make this quote any less valid. Because, as we unpacked it and really thought into it, there’s really cool ways that we can think about this. You know, we’ve got two different pieces of advice here. The first is, “work as if you were to live a hundred years.”

Kay:

Oh, I love, love, LOVE this part! Because, when we’re thinking of working to live as if you were to live a hundred years, we’re really thinking about what am I doing today that 99 year old me will thank me for?! And, not like, “what do I do in this period of my life?”, but like, “what do you do…TODAY?”

Shi:

Right? It’s asking the question of: What it is that I need to be investing in right NOW…(in my fitness – in my finances – in my career – in my skill building – and in my relationships)…that will set me up to be a happy, hundred-year-old at the end of the timeline!

Kay:

Yeah, exactly! You know, working every day as if you were to live to be a hundred years old means really thinking about setting yourself up for longevity. So, from things as simple as brushing your teeth, to things as big as setting up automatic savings accounts that do your withdrawals every month so that you have money leftover…and don’t actually have to work when you do get to 100!

Shi:

Right? You don’t want to be that one hundred year old who’s destitute and unable to take care of themselves financially. We want to leave a legacy for our kids! Which means, we have to work as if we were to live to a hundred years. But, the flip side of this quote, (which gives us another dimension of perspective) is to, “pray as if you were to die tomorrow.”

Kay:

Well, living a spiritual life that is full (regardless of how you practice), is really about finding ways to connect to that inner being, that inner self, and that inner piece of you – whether that be in peace and quiet, in active prayer, or in whatever that practice of spirituality is like for you. But, if you were to die tomorrow, wouldn’t you want to connect to whatever that is, here on earth?

Shi:

Right? Well, when I think about what Benjamin means here, he is really referring to that spiritual connection. It’s about understanding this way to connect to a deeper purpose, to find fulfillment, and to realize the tiny, insignificant amount of time that we have, because (even if it IS a hundred years) we don’t know how much time we will get on this earth…which means that we want to have hope, humility, humbleness, spirituality and fulfillment – right here, and right now!

Kay:

So work hard, and live deep, is what he’s saying here! And, it’s okay to find depth within that part of your life. So many of us shut it out thinking that it’s not important, and we only focus on the first half of the quote, thinking that “if I just work really hard, that’ll get me toward the successful piece.” But, if we ignore the part of ourselves that keeps going when we die, we rob ourselves of a whole experience on earth. Because that is part of the gift of being a human being!

Shi:

So, a hundred dollar bill Benjamin Franklin tells us, “Work as if you were to live a hundred years. Pray as if you were to die tomorrow.”

Kay:

SO – today’s quest is to: Take a moment today to just connect to that energy inside! Embark on that inner exploration! Whether it’s god, or the universe, or your own soul…take a quick moment to get quiet enough to connect (until you can kind of feel that warmth and love that is supporting your very existence)!

Shi:

Yep! I mean, it’s Friday…so, whatever your version of “pray” is, that’s your job today on your quest! And, we hope you have a great weekend!

Kay:

We hope it’s a 100 😉
