The Daily Scroll: A Mentorship Recap – May 25th, 2020 Show Notes

Kay:

Hello there Questers, and welcome to The Mentorship Quest 101! This is Episode 101, and we’re excited to be with you today for a quote from basketball legend – Sean Higgins!

Shi:

Ooh, Sean Higgins! He says, “Every day the clock resets. Your wins don’t matter. Your failures don’t matter. Don’t stress on what was, fight for what could be.”

Kay:

What a good quote! Four sentences, but a whole lot of value. Now, what he’s talking about here is that every single day we get the opportunity to treat it like it’s brand new! And, every day, we have the opportunity to, in a way, create our own future!

Shi:

To shape it and to start fresh! And, to prove yourself again! And, to pick yourself back up again. And, either do something, or not do something…but that doesn’t even really matter because…the next day…the clock resets!

Kay:

Exactly! One of our mentors, John Maxwell, says that he gives himself 24 hours to celebrate after a win. And, he does the same thing for a loss! If he loses, he gives himself 24 hours to mourn, and then he picks himself back up again, and gets back to work. Because, oftentimes, when we win, people have a tendency to rest on their laurels a little bit, and maybe not pick back up and get working again.

Shi:

And, when they lose, they have a tendency to wallow and sit in this analysis paralysis over exactly what happened with the failure! And so, I’ve always loved that rule. And, I know Kay and I practice doing this. We will have a good win, or a good day, and we’ll say, “I am taking the 24 hours.” Like, “I just want to enjoy it. I want to savor it…and I’m going to pat myself on the back here, because that’s pretty great!” But then, after that…on hour 25…it’s time to go back to work! Because, it’s a new day and it’s time to prove ourselves once again!

Kay:

Well, here’s the thing…So many of us think that once we reach the particular goal, that is the end. Like, “Oh, I crossed the finish line, and now I’m at the end of the race!” But, the thing about life is that time keeps going. And, we keep aging and things keep happening. And, you know, in Tangled there’s a quote where she says, “What if it’s not everything I’ve always dreamed it to be?”…(referencing getting to see the lanterns for the first time)…And, Flint says, “Well it will be.” And, she responds, “Well, what if it IS everything I’ve always imagined?…Then what?” And, Flint said, “Well then you get to go find a new dream!”

Shi:

I love that quote, in that part of the movie! And, Flint reminding her that you get to keep going. You know, I think one of the misnomers is this idea that whatever it is that you start in your twenties – that’s what you’re going to do for the rest of your life. But, you don’t have to do that! You have decades ahead of you. You can make new choices…OR, you can do 20 years in a career, and then start something completely different! And so, things don’t have to be so final. Because, time resets. And, you know, time is just a construct really, anyways! And so, we think, “Well I did that a week ago, so I still need to carry shame around.” But, that’s just a construct you’ve built for yourself around how long you should carry your guilt.

Kay:

Look…not even your physical body carries around for longer than like three weeks at a time. So, you carrying around your emotional guilt from things that have happened a year..six months…a month ago…It’s silly! I mean, the whole wide world is built off of cycles. We grow, and we express, and then we keep moving forward! But everybody has the same 24 hours in a day. And so, when you pick up after a failure or after a win – when you pick up and you get back to work – what you’re doing is you’re allowing the momentum of whatever it was that’s behind you…the lesson OR the blessing (which we’ll talk about later this week), to propel you forward!

Shi:

Well, time is that beautiful tool that we are gifted that does propel us forward. And it’s the one thing that we ALL have in equalness! And, how we spend our time ends up being our legacy, and determining whether or not we achieve what it is that we want to achieve! And so, this idea that we all start over again at the start of the day (and you get to race the 24 hours along with 7 billion of us), BUT, that at the start of the next day it really does start back from zero...is really just such a good reminder to stay present!

Kay:

Yup! Staying in the moment. I love that you said that. Because, time and the present moment is the one thing that we all have equally. You know, you might not have it in the next moment or next week, but we all have it right now...and that’s really beautiful! And so, when we look at the present moment, a lot of times we can say, “Well, I can see all the things that are wrong with it. I can just look around and, (because I am being realistic here) all the things that could go wrong, or might go wrong, or that have gone wrong, I’m carrying with me.” But, often, and too often, does the realist, fight reality, and say, “Well, it’s supposed to be this way or it should be that way… And I say that because I’m realistic.” But, if it was supposed to be a certain way, then it WOULD be a certain way. And so, fighting against what IS, doesn’t really make much sense!

Shi:

Right? If you’re the realist, you want to get along with reality! But, anyways – to remind you, today’s quote is from Sean Higgins – the basketball player, turned arena owner! And, he says, “Every day the clock resets. Your wins don’t matter. Your failures don’t matter. Don’t stress on what was, fight for what could be.”

Kay:

Ooh, so, SO good! So, today’s quest is to: Write something down from last week (so something in the last seven days) that you want to leave in last week. Write it down onto a piece of paper, and then rip it up into little pieces, and throw it in the trash! (Slam dunk anyone? 😉 BUT, before you walk away from the trash, feel that turn as you walk away, and know, (once and for all!) that whatever is on that paper is now behind you!

Shi:

Happy questing!
