Kay:
Hey-yo, Questers welcome back. It’s Wednesday, May 26th and this is episode 363. We have a really fun quote for you today from Sherry Kari Baum the My Nutrition Nurse and she says, “If you keep good food in your fridge, you will eat good food.”
Shi:
Oh my gosh, just plain good advice here from a woman that we adore. She is known as My Nutrition Nurse, which is the name of her business that she’s actually partnered with our mom…
Kay:
Hi mom.
Shi:
…Misty Young and was originally our mom’s nutrition nurse. A friend that she met up with in Brookings, Oregon. They became fast friends. Nurse Sherry has been a nurse practitioner for years and years and years and specializes in nutrition. When mom met her, she immediately began asking every nutrition question she could, and Sherry became known as My Nutrition Nurse internally in the family. Then mom and Sherry realized that the world at large needed My Nutrition Nurse. Now they have a business, they coach others, they have recipes. They have a book “From Sad to Glad.” They have incredible opportunities and partnerships rolling out around the country and it’s exciting to see that growing, but it all stems from this dedication to whole food plant-based eating that can really help you help a myriad of issues in your life, both mental and physical. But many of us get stuck right at the beginning of our health journey with how do I eat better?
Kay:
Well, if you’re pursuing a whole food plant-based diet, or maybe you’re just looking to gain a little bit more health and nutrition in your diet, then this advice in today’s quote is just one that you can really take home with you because if you have good food in your fridge and maybe not bad options, then you are, I don’t want to say more likely. You just don’t even have a chance to pick the bad stuff. So, you don’t give yourself the bad option. You have the good options only, and lo and behold, you’re eating good food. Now, this principle came into my life in a different way. Shila when you once told me if you’re hungry enough to eat an apple, then you are actually hungry. But if you’re not hungry enough to eat an apple, then you’re likely just snacking.
Shi:
Right. I heard that. I can’t even remember who the nutritionist was, but it was an interview when Jon Stewart was still hosting The Daily Show. In this interview, he said, if you’re hungry enough to eat an apple, then eat an Apple. Otherwise, you’re just bored eating or you’re feeling hunger from a different source. That always stuck with me as well and this advice from nurse Sherry, I love because if we can just make the decisions when we’re grocery shopping, and if you’re like most of us, these days you’re grocery shopping from your phone. So, you’re really removed, you’re not standing in the aisle looking at all the colorful boxes and the marketing packaging. You can truly do all of your ordering from your phone. But if you do not have those temptation options in front of you, it doesn’t become a question of willpower. So, I know, in both of our weight journeys, through the years that willpower comes into play a lot, I just don’t have the will for it or gosh, you have to battle it. But the battle is completely removed. It doesn’t even become an issue if you don’t have the food in your house. Are you standing there at 6:30 at night wishing that the Cocoa Puffs were in the pantry?
Kay:
Yes.
Shi:
Of course, you are. Of course, you are. But if they’re not there, you won’t eat them and maybe you’ll grab the apple or maybe you’ll open your fridge and see, I’ve got some carrot and carrots and hummus, or maybe some chocolate hummus and that makes me feel like I’ve got the sweet treat. But what you put in your fridge are the options that you’ll eat through the week which then becomes the options that you eat through the month and your life and your year and then your body reflects that, and you never even had to have the willpower battle, to begin with.
Kay:
If you had a fire that was contained but burning in your house at all times making your home extremely hot and unbearable to live in, you would remove the fire and solve the problem. It’s the same thing. If you’ve got a fire in your refrigerator and your mind can’t stop battling over whether it can, can’t, should, shouldn’t eat that thing in the fridge, get the fire out of your house. Remove the problem from your physical space and then you will not physically even have the option to be too hot because of that ever-burning fire in your fridge, or to maybe feel like you made a decision that you weren’t proud of. So, as a reminder, Sherry Kari Baum the My Nutrition Nurse herself tells us, “If you keep good food in your fridge, you will eat good food.”
Shi:
