The Daily Scroll: A Mentorship Recap – May 31st, 2021 Show Notes

Kay:

Hello Questers, Merry Monday and happy holiday weekend. We are celebrating Memorial Day here on this May 31st. You’ve got episode 366 here for you today and we have a quote from the former President of the United States, Mr. John F. Kennedy.

Shi:

He says, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

Kay:

So, today is Memorial Day. We are appreciating and loving on and honoring those that have fallen in the line of duty in military endeavors through the United States’ history. Thank goodness there are men and women willing to not just serve for our country but to die for our country.

Shi:

I think it’s important to take a day, here in the US it’s Memorial Day, to take a day, no matter where you are in the world, what country you’re in to honor and appreciate and respect those who have fought on behalf of your country and your belief system. That’s a pretty dang big sacrifice so one day doesn’t feel like enough, which is why this quote from John F. Kennedy is so important because real appreciation is living by the gratitude that we feel in our heart.

Kay:

Yes, and Memorial Day is a day that we have to celebrate specifically and remember specifically those who perished in battle. If you are someone who has served in the military, thank you for your service and we look forward to celebrating you on Veteran’s Day in November. But as we look into this, John F. Kennedy quote, when we’re thinking about expressing our gratitude. If we’re going to express our gratitude to people who, if they were to look back on their life, the legacy would likely say that they died for your freedom. So, if you are living out that fullest truth and that fullest gratitude, then what does that freedom look like to you?

Shi:

How is it that you use your actions to demonstrate it and how is it that you demonstrate all of your ideals that you’re grateful for, that you cherish with your actions and not just your words? I think the words feel really good when you hear them, but we’ve all been in a situation where someone says false words to you, or words you don’t believe, or empty words or words that you do believe that then end up being not true. That feeling of violation, of letdown, of inability to achieve the peaceful thing that you’re seeking. It’s such a personal feeling and it can be really tough but when we do that to ourselves, we’re often a little more forgiving of ourselves or we want to judge ourselves by those intentions rather than our actions, which is, which is why we want to focus on those actions so that we can demonstrate to our fullest extent.

Kay:

So, if we’re demonstrating our gratitude here on Memorial Day, for those who have gone ahead and laid their life on the line, there’s a lot of different ways that this can come forward. Maybe this means to you that you’re going to take that gift of freedom or the sacrifice that they made and pay that forward to somebody else. Is there some kind of sacrifice that you make, maybe in your daily life? Have you ever stood up for somebody else? Someone who died for you in the line of duty in their eyes and likely in many others’ eyes, we’re standing up for you. So, if we’re paying that forward, maybe that looks like standing up for someone else.

Shi:

Standing up for someone who’s being bullied or standing up for someone that you believe in or standing up for someone who you think deserves a second chance who might not be getting it or someone who society judges with a stigma or scent or someone in your life that maybe you’ve judged that, that you could be more forgiving too. Sometimes I know we like to reflect on the thought that we can be nicer to strangers than we are to the people that are closest to us. That law of familiarity comes in for all of us but remembering to bring that forward because if we really do feel that gratitude, what does that look like especially to those that we’re grateful for is an excellent question to ask yourself.

Kay:

So, as the 35th President of the United States of America, Mr. John F. Kennedy tells us, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

Shi:

Alright, that brings you to your Memorial Day Quest in honor of those that have sacrificed to serve our country or whatever country you’re listening in. We want you to perform one action in appreciation and gratitude. What does an act of appreciation look like for you? Is it striking a friendly conversation in the checkout line instead of standing there sourly grumbling and wishing it wasn’t taking too long? Paying it forward at Starbucks. Choose one action today that will allow you to embody your appreciation for life and those that serve to protect it. Are you ready? Say it with us now.
