The Daily Scroll: A Mentorship Recap – November 12th, 2020 Show Notes

Shi:

Hey Questers, welcome back! This is episode 224 and it’s November 12th. We have a quote for you today from Nick Santonastasso and he says “What do you need to cut off to get where you want to go?”

Kay:

Now, what you might not know if you’ve never heard of Nick before is that he was born with a rare condition that prevented his limbs from fully growing. So he was born with one arm and no legs and has now turned into an internet star, an entrepreneur, a motivational coach and SO much more. And we actually had the honor of being in an influence of a role-playing event with him and you know we won…

Shi:

We did win.

Kay:

We won.

Shi:

It was pretty great.

Kay:

He’s an international speaker, so it was an honor to get the opportunity to even be considered to compete against him and was really fun to get into the situation. It was a little high pressure. Shi and I are quick thinkers on our feet and he had so much grace in the whole thing but it was wonderful, and a lot of fun to get to know him a little more, as well as know his story. And he’s really done some incredible things even being so physically disadvantaged as he is.

Shi:

He is definitely very into fitness, and into motivation. But we also sometimes get to work with Nick Vujicic.

Kay:

Vujicic.

Shi:

Vujicic yes- or as John Maxwell calls him Nick and Nick V, also has no arms and no legs and it’s just really interesting to hear the perspective, the resilience, the persistence, and the optimism that comes from this condition and people who are born and raised with this. You can really see how being cut off from something really can help you grow to new heights.

Kay:

Now getting that outside of the, I guess the “alignment” of his limblessness and the cutoffedness of this particular quote. When we’re talking about cutting things out of our lives sometimes this can feel like it’s a bad thing, right? Like I’m going to lose something or I have to cut it out or like it’s a failure or a loss or I’m quitting and it’s not good, you know? Like those things have a very negative association with them. But recently I completed the book Dream Big by Bob Goff and in it he talks about this principle where he quits something every Thursday. He says I quit something because, oftentimes, (be it in unnecessary email subscription a charity board that you frankly don’t really have time for or maybe it’s a toxic person in your life), there are some things that it’s OKAY to quit!

Shi:

Right, I’m so glad the first example was one I wanted to bring up. Even this morning, I unsubscribed from an email and got to the landing page that said, “Are you sure you want to go?” and I hesitated. I like following this organization. I don’t want them to see me unsubscribe and feel slighted by that and have that moment of hesitation, but I also know that it’s not healthy for me or my inbox to get this overflow and I never open the emails anyways. So, it can even be something so little that you feel like it’s a logical choice. We’ve realized there’s emotions coming up but in order to be more efficient to go higher and accomplish more I need to be more focused and that means less distractions in the inbox. So, unsubscribing from things like that make sense but there were still emotions wrapped up into it that made it hard to click unsubscribe!

Kay:

Right, and when Nick is asking this question it’s kind of getting to the heart of the matter. Like what do you need to cut off to get to where you want to go? You might think that an email subscription isn’t something that will really make that big of a difference, but that mental real estate daily coming into your inbox and then wondering and the thought train like that’s ALL energy that could have been spent on something else! And like Oprah says…(this is like a 3 for 1 Quote Day)!

Shi:

Yea, we’re giving you ALL the quotes today.

Kay:

Like Oprah says we all have the same 24 hours in the day. And so it’s really about the micro-adjustments on how we use our time – even down to the thought train for 10 or 15 seconds that gets distracted by an email coming into the box!

Shi:

Right? Well let’s just throw in the fourth and talk about Atomic Habits really quick from author James Clear.

Kay:

I was trying not to bring him up!

Shi:

Kay and I both obsess over and love James’ book. It is such a good book and so incredibly valuable and helps you make some of those micro shifts that can have really huge outcomes for you. And talking about this alignment, (quote number 5 – this might be a Mentorship Quest record!) Tony Robbins teaches on the principle that, if you want to take the island, burn the boats. And the boats can be past relationships, they can be toxic habits, they can be all kinds of different things. What island is it that you want to take? What boats do you need to burn in order to get yourself in this space in order to take that island? And, of course, “What do you need to cut off to get where you want to go?” which was Nick’s quote for us today.

Kay:

Now, today’s quest is a…you guessed it…

Kay & Shi:

CUT OFF QUEST!

Shi:

Cut it. What do you have to cut off to get to where you want to go? Is it doubt or bad habit? Is it self sabotage, is it someone or something? Whatever it is, choose one thing today to cut off today! And, hey – it’s Thursday too! – so you and Bob Goff you’re going to be quitting something together today 😉

Kay:

Maybe an email subscription.

Shi:

And think of it like trimming the tree of life to allow for a better and brighter growth in your future! Are you ready?

Kay and Shi:

Let’s quest!
