The Daily Scroll: A Mentorship Recap – October 23rd, 2020 Show Notes

Kay:

Hey there, Questers and welcome back! It’s Friday, October 23rd, and this is Episode 210. Wherever you are in the nation, we hope you’re enjoying the beautiful Fall weather. We have a great quote for you today from the one and only Rachel Hollis!

Shi:

She tells us, “Work just as hard for fun moments, vacation moments, and pee-your-pants-laughing moments as you do for all the other things.”

Kay:

Now, as a couple of big fans of pee-your-pants-laughing moments, we are definitely fans of this quote too.

Shi:

Oh, well, she tells us to work hard for those moments. And I think what we kind of unpack here are those little moments that you look forward to that make some of those long, arduous moments worth it. And when we let ourselves be excited about those, look forward to them, and plan for them, we have a more fulfilling life.

Kay:

Well, I think that many of us can think that we work for a specific thing that has to be grandiose.

Shi: Noble.

Kay:

Or noble. I think about a family getting totally obsessed with what they have to do on a vacation versus just being with each other. I’ve heard lots of tales of, “Oh my God, my family, they go, go, GO on vacation. All we do is activities. Like we zip line, and we do ATVs, and we do all the things, but we don’t ever just like laugh on the beach, or hang out,” or vice versa, “I want to do more things and have more of those vacation moments and experiences,” but maybe they’re not being prioritized.

Shi:

Well, I know one thing that both of us really resonated and related to in reading Rachel Hollis’s work, ( both Girl, Wash Your Face and Girl, Stop Apologizing) is kind of…Well, for a little background, Rachel is a self-proclaimed workaholic and we can absolutely relate to this as well. You’re passionate about what you do, you’re purpose-driven, you’ve got multi-different projects in the air, and things that excite you, and you want to do well by all of them. And you can end up just working to work. And so, this reminder here to also work just as hard to have those moments of reprieve, and to have those moments where everything else slows down and stops around you and you just enjoy yourself and the beautiful experience that you’re in, even if it’s just driving down the street and you see a beautiful fall tree, that can be amazing too! But letting yourself know that those goals are okay and that they’re part of a normal path of happiness, for workaholics and non-workaholics alike, can be a really good reminder.

Kay:

Well, oftentimes, workaholics focus on material gains, or on the adding of money, or the adding of another vacation home, or the adding of a car or a certain monetary signature of wealth in their life. And so, many times I think we can find ourselves in a trap of working for stuff, and you put it on your vision board, and you think about the stuff, and you really want the STUFF and the THINGS. But it turns out that the stuff and things don’t fulfill you and don’t give you that lasting sense of excitement and gratitude so much as fun moments and pee-your-pants-laughing moments do. I mean, some of my best memories and clearest memories are of giggling in hotel rooms.

Shi:

Mm-hmm! And usually, we’ve worked really hard to get into that hotel room. And so, letting that payoff be part of the package allows you to see it in a more expansive way, and a more dimensional way, (which is just good for you in general), but also, so is the laughter, so is the fun, and so is that a redefining and reframing around working hard for those moments as you do for the bigger mission, or the noble goal, or the message or project you want to get out.

Kay:

Or the Porsche.

Shi:

Right, or the material thing, for sure. Everyone says, “It’s the little moments that make it last,” and this advice is telling us to be intentional about those little moments.

Kay:

And when those little moments show up, be intentional about leaning in to them.

Shi:

Well, it’s been shown that it takes 17 seconds to put an intention out there, so it takes 17 seconds for the universe to notice, and to see that you’re not just having this blip on the radar, but that you’re actually having this intentional moment. So, we always encourage you, whether you’re having a silly pee-your-pants moment, or a vacation moment, or a fun moment, or a grateful moment, to lean in and let it go into that 17 seconds plus, so that you can let the universe know that you’re intentional about these moments and that you want more of them.

Kay:

Just as Rachel Hollis says, “We want to work just as hard for fun moments, vacation moments, and pee- your-pants-laughing moments as we do for all other things.”

Shi:

So, of course, you’ve got a Weekend Work Quest!

Kay:

Oop, oop!

Shi:

Your #FriYAY quest is to work for those wonderful moments and memories this weekend. Yes, we want you to work towards the fun, the mini-vacation, and the pee-your-pants-laughter moments. We hope you have a great weekend! Are you ready?

Kay & Shi:

Let’s quest!
