The Daily Scroll: A Mentorship Recap – July 7th, 2021 Show Notes

Kay:

Hey there, Questers welcome back. It’s Wednesday, July 7th which is always a fun day because it’s 7/7.

Shi:

7/7!

Kay:

Gotta love it. If only there was one additional seven, we would have a jackpot baby. This is episode 393 and we have a Queen B quote for you today from Beyonce Knowles and she says, “Imma keep running ’cause a winner don’t quit on themselves.”

Shi:

Oh, it’s said with so much power and confidence and love that level of certainty coming through with anything Beyonce says but particularly into this message here because when it boils down to it, it’s a really simple message but it’s one we all need desperately and it’s just two words. I guess it’s a word, but it’s contracted, and another word: don’t quit.

Kay:

Yep. Do not quit. Don’t quit on yourself. Don’t quit on your dream. Don’t quit on your momentum. You keep running because winners believe that they can win before they win. If somebody who has a gold medal around their neck never thought that they could even have a chance at winning the competition, do you think they’d be in the competition in the first place? No, they would not. So, it really does start with that mindset of I’m not going to give up. There was an interesting thing that happened in between Shila and I a few years ago when we kind of looked at each other and we’re like, okay, Kay’s moving home and we’re starting to like speak together and the Squeeze In is going together and she leveled with me, sat down at the table, did a fist pound and said, “Look, are you in this for the long haul because if we win, I want us to win together but it means that we don’t quit on us no matter what, along the way.”

Shi:

That’s that mentality right. I love that you said it starts with that mindset and it keeps going with that mindset too. I think a lot of us hear a quote like this and think, oh, they don’t quit on themselves. That means that they just decided, and then they never wanted to quit. The finesse of really getting this right means that every time you want to quit, you say no to yourself, that every time you thrash, and you hurt, and you got stabbed in the back, or it’s harder than you thought, or the thing fell through, or somebody lied or whatever it is that you don’t quit. It’s those moments where everything inside of you wants to quit and you hold onto this thread of resolve that, “I’m going to believe in myself.” That thread has to be that belief that you can, but I wanted to bring that up here because how often, even if you’ve decided you’re going to do it, do you still feel like quitting? A lot.

Kay:

What’s interesting is that over the course of the last (it’s actually been four years now which is amazing), about four, three and a half, four years, that we’ve been really leaning into our partnership together…

Shi:

Podcasting

Kay:

… podcasting and here with all of you, guys. Within that timing, we’ve had a lot of instances where we have wanted to quit and over time it honestly gets easier to say no to the urge that says quit. In 2018, we had several challenges that Shila came back to me and said, “That’s it, I want to run away. I want to go get in my cabin.” In 2019, I had some challenges when I came to Shila and said, “frankly, I’m struggling with not driving my car into the wall on the way to work because things are so difficult right now and I’m looking for an escape.” In 2020, we had literally the hardest thing that has ever happened to us come our way and we didn’t quit, and we had so much resolve in it, and I feel so much more empowered on the backend.

Shi:

Yeah.

Kay:

You can never take us down now.

Shi:

Yeah, and if you can think back on your life of things that you’ve done that were so hard as you went through them, aren’t those the things that you’re most proud of, aren’t those, your greatest accomplishments? The things that you didn’t quit, that you stuck with it that you kept going, that you powered through, those are the things that add so much texture to the fabric of our lives, and that give us accomplishments that we’re proud of, and that we want to build from and do more with. But that doesn’t discolor the fact that you wanted to quit so many times along the way but once you accomplish something, I know if you think back in your history, you can remember some of these things that you’ve done. Some high school accomplishments, some sports accomplishments, some relationship accomplishments, some fitness goals. We’ve all had things that were really, really hard, but we made it through and we’re telling you it will help you a lot to remember those things and remember that there were hard times and remember that you wanted to quit because with that remembering will come the strength and knowledge to get you through whatever it is that you’re going through now. So, to remind you of what Miss queen Beyonce tells us, “I’ma keep running ’cause a winner don’t quit on themselves.”

Kay:

Ooh, I love that. Well, today, we’re going to prove that you’re a winner by doing a Workout Wednesday Quest. Today, we want you to run, jog, or walk for five minutes straight without stopping. But here’s the catch. If you’re normally a walker, we want you to jog. If you’re normally a jogger, we want you to run and if you’re normally a do-nothing, we want you to get up and go take a walk. Because when you push yourself just a little bit, you add resilience so that when it comes to feeling like you want to quit, you can remember a time you didn’t and lean back on it to get yourself through. Remember a winner doesn’t quit on themselves and you can do anything for five minutes. Are you ready? You know, the words…

Kay & Shi:

Let’s quest!
